What are leased lines?
A leased line is a premium form of broadband, it offers your business dedicated internet access, which means no more sharing with your neighbors. If your business depends upon its internet connection or requires high-powered connectivity, lease lines can increase speeds and provide reliable broadband access.
A dedicated, fixed-bandwidth data connection means that businesses can rely on high up time levels and fast speeds. The term ‘leased’ simply refers to the broadband access, which is rented from the Internet Service Provide (ISP).
What's the difference between a leased line and broadband?
The majority of people are familiar with broadband, after all 89% of adults in Great Britain used the internet at least weekly in 2018! The majority of us are familiar with standard broadband, with phones, tablets, laptops and TVs now capable of connecting. However, do you know the difference between leased and standard broadband? No? You’re not alone, that’s why we want to help you understand what a leased line vs broadband offers you.
Leasing a business line
A leased line, which you may also hear being referred to as dedicated internet access gives you a direct connection between the local exchange and your premises. This type has a fixed bandwidth, giving you identical upload and download speeds helping to improve connectivity. In addition to this, you will not share your access with any other users. When your business leases a line, the bandwidth your business relies upon will be allocated only to you, so your business won’t be hampered during peak times.
One of the key factors of renting, is the reliability and Service Level Agreement (SLAs).With a leased line, should your service not be available, you’ll be up and running again within hours rather than days, minimising the impact on your working days.
We’ve chosen to work with an industry leading partner who guarantees 100% uptime as part of your SLA, so your working days should not be affected. Should your connection unfortunately be down for a period of time, 1 day of credit will be applied to your account for every hour you are without service.
Business Broadband
Business broadband is very much like home broadband, it’s not accessed that is solely available to you. Your broadband is delivered from the cabinet, which you will have seen, it is one of those green boxes that you often see at the side of the road. This then travels to the exchange and then onto your premises, which is shared with everyone else from the cabinet!
With business broadband you will find the bandwidth varies hour-to-hour and day-to-day. This is due to the fact that the access is being shared with other users. An ADSL connection uses a copper cable, which is not capable of providing the bandwidth speeds which the fibre cables of leased options offer.
Broadband is asymmetric, which means it does not have equal download and upload speeds. With broadband you will generally find that the download speed is faster than the upload speed. Many modern businesses are increasingly relying on cloud services, which require reliable and also fast uploading speeds, in addition to fast download speeds.
Although both types of connection are carried through a cable, the main differences when leasing are:
- Dedicated internet to your premise direct from the exchange.
- A private and secure connection, which is exclusive to your business.
- Symmetrical connection gives you equal download and uploading speeds.
- Service level agreement offering 100% up time, which means no more access disruptions!
