What are the different types of business broadband available?

With so many broadband options available, it's difficult to know what's going to help your business run smoothly. From the different types of broadband connectivity to download and upload speeds, there are so many available options.

FTTC - Fibre to the cabinet
FTTC stands for Fibre to the cabinet or as it's more commonly known 'fibre broadband'. Business fibre broadband uses a combination of fibre optic and copper cables instead of relying solely on copper cables. In order to deliver broadband internet to your premises, there's a fibre optic cable from your local telephone exchange to a roadside cabinet, which acts as the distribution point. From the cabinet, your broadband connectivity will be delivered via the standard copper cable telephone line.

Business fibre broadband typically offers internet speeds up to 80Mbps, which is a substantial increase on the ADSL variants. With internet speeds like this, you also have the ability to use VoIP.

There are various packages offering superfast business fibre optic broadband. To understand whether FTTC would be the right choice for your business, compare business broadband online.
ADSL, ADSL2 & ADSL2+ - Asymmetric digital subscriber line
ADSL offers a basic business internet line, which is carried by using the same copper cable that your phone line uses. The speed of your ADSL internet connection will have varying factors, the most notable being your location and the distance you are away from the street cabinet exchange. The absolute maximum download speed you could potentially see would be 8Mbps. In short, the longer the distance from the exchange to your modem, the slower your internet speed will be.

ADSL2 & ADSL2+ are the more modern version of ADSL. The enhanced technology supports the ability to deliver higher broadband speed to your business premises, in particular those that are closest to the exchange. The main difference between ADSL2 and ADSL2+ is the bandwidth. ADSL and ADSL2 use the same amount of bandwidth, whereas ADSL2+ uses twice as much.

ADSL2+ generally performs better when the exchange is within close proximity to the premises. If your exchange is some distance away, you may find that ADSL2 performs better. ADSL2 and ADSL2+ download speeds vary from 2Mbps to 24Mbps.
FTTP - Fibre to the premises
Looking for ultrafast broadband speed? FTTP offers fibre optic cable all the way from the telephone exchange right to your business premises – there's no copper cable used at all. By using entirely fibre optic cable end to end, internet speeds start from 40Mbps and can scale up to a 330Mbps!

FTTP is most commonly used by businesses who require the ability to handle large volumes of data, quickly and securely with minimum interruptions. If having an ultrafast, reliable and stable business broadband connection is what you're looking for, this may be the solution for you.

Compare ultrafast business broadband today and we'll help you get the best deal for your business.
